The School of Medical Laboratory Sciences for training Laboratory Assistants was launched in Tanzania
in early 1960s under the Tanganyika Medical Training Board and run under the Ministry of Health DSM. By then health personnel
resource were very short. Nonetheless equipments such as Microscopes in the laboratories were also few.
Training of a higher level had to be done abroad. By 1970s the school of Laboratory Sciences was established
at Muhimbili Hospital
in Dar under The University of East Africa.
This could by then offer only certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in various disciplines of Laboratory Sciences.
Today in Tanzania degrees are offered at various Universities in Medical Laboratory Sciences.
The Institute of ALLIED AND HEALTH SCIENCES (IAHS) at CUHAS was a result of the Lab. Assistant conversion in 2003 when
the University was founded. The Institute is comprised of two other schools, Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science (DPS)
and Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography (DDR).
