Teaching
The department of Obs and Gyn was started in 1980s and it was primarily offering health services to patients in the hospital. In late 1980s to early 1990s it started handling nursing students and intern doctors, who were supervised and mentored by the specialists who worked in those years. The department kept growing in service provision and number of staff (specialists, registrars, nurses).
In 1998 when the idea to start a medical school at Bugand the department had about 7 specialists, and these included Dr. Gumodoka, Dr. Kilonzo, Dr. Kajura, Dr. Ng’walida, Dr. Rumanyika, Dr. Mahendeka and Dr. Majinge who was also the DG of BMC. The medical school was launched in 2003 as a faculty of medicine under St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT). In 2006 the department welcomed its 1st batch of 2 MMed residents, the number has grown to a current one of 16 residents a year. In 2012 the department celebrated the birth of Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). Since its establishment the department has seen more than 60 specialists Obstetricians graduating to go and serve the community, a big pride to the department staff. Currently there are 15 specialists in the department
The department has 3 core functions; providing specialized health services, train doctors and nurses on reproductive health issues and the last one is research. There are researches going on by students and others are operational by the staff of the department. Areas of interest spread to materno-fetal medicine, gyn-oncology, community obstetrics and infectious conditions of reproductive system.
In future the department plans to have super specialties in uro-gynecology, gyn-oncology, materno-fetal medicine, endocrinology, infertility. We intend to accomplish this through collaborations with other universities in Canada, USA, Germany, Uganda. The department invites all who wish to form collaborations in any field of agreed sectors.
