DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS AND PHARMACY PRACTICE

The Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice is a place where commitment to excellence in academia, research, and development is demonstrated. It focuses on providing students with knowledge and skills in the quantitative aspects of drug delivery and pharmacist practices. These include the design, development, and evaluation of drugs in combination with an appropriate dosage form; biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics; professional ethics; drug dispensing; drug management; applied communication skills; drug storage and inventory; and community pharmacy operations. The students also are equipped with expertise in therapeutics, in which they acquire knowledge of diseases and their management as well as skills in patient assessment and clinical health care.

Dr. Stanley Mwita

Head Of Department

Stanley Mwita (BPharm, MSc Pharmaceutical Management, PhD) is a pharmacist and lecturer in pharmacy practice. Currently, he serves as the Head of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice at the School of Pharmacy, Catholic University of Health, and Allied Sciences (CUHAS)—Bugando Mwanza, Tanzania. He has supervised over 30 undergraduate research projects and 3 postgraduate dissertations, reviewed 16 manuscripts as the reviewer of several international journals, and co-authored over 36 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, he has co-written a policy brief on antimicrobial dispensing practices. His professional goal is to pursue a career in teaching, consultation, and research in pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical management, and public health research.

Ms. Chiku B Mruma

Chiku B Mruma: She is a registered pharmacist and a Health scientist at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS).She did her bachelor degree of pharmacy at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences CUHAS (2017-2021) and conducted her internship at Bugando Medical Center 2021/2022. Prior to joining CUHAS she was a pharmaceutical tutor at buhongwa college of health and allied sciences

Mr. EMMANUEL ELIAMLISI KIMARO

Assistant lecturer

Emmanuel E. Kimaro is a registered pharmacist and Assistant lecturer at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). He did undergraduate studies (2008-2012) and Masters of pharmacy in Industrial pharmacy (2015-2017) at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Currently (2024) working on data collection for a PhD program in pharmaceutical sciences “Impact of household storage conditions on the quality of insulin, glycemic control and the cost of managing diabetes in Mwanza, Tanzania”. He joined CUHAS in the department of pharmaceutics and pharmacy practice in 2013 soon after finishing his internship program. Over the years he developed an interest in pharmaceutical formulation development, analytical method development (Thin layer chromatographic technique) and regulatory sciences. Lastly he also has passion for linking entrepreneurship and the skills we are teaching our students.

Mr. Deogratias Mwombeki Katabalo

Assistant Lecturer

Deogratias Mwombeki Katabalo. Assistant Lecturer at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS) in the School of Pharmacy, focusing on pharmacokinetics and therapeutics. Provides clinical pharmacy services in pediatric and oncology departments and mentors undergraduate students in clinical research activities. Currently pursuing a PhD in clinical pharmacy under the Higher Education for Economic Transformation project. Research focuses on the pharmacogenomics of chemotherapies in children with cancer in Africa, including factors associated with chemotherapy-induced toxicities, support drug prescription practices, and genetic variations affecting chemotherapy outcomes in African populations. Author of 27 articles, with publications in journals like Lancet Oncology and the Journal of Cancer Medicine.

Mr. BARAKA AUGUSTINE FUNDO

Baraka Fundo is a registered pharmacist and a Tutorial Assistant at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). He earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam, (2018 to 2022). Prior to his current role at CUHAS, he served as a Tutor at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Kampala International University in Dar es Salaam. Before his tenure at Kampala International University, he undertook his internship at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam. His professional interests include Clinical Pharmacy, Molecular Pharmacology, and Pharmacovigilance, reflecting his dedication to advancing pharmaceutical science and ensuring optimal patient care.

Mr. JAMES CLEMENT KAPALA

James Kapala (Bpharm, MPharm) is a registered Pharmacist and an assistant lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS-BUGANDO). He completed his bachelor of pharmacy degree at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences in 2015 and a Master degree of Pharmacy in Quality Control and Quality Assurance in the year 2023 at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. He is eager to mentor others, through teaching and innovative research. His future ambitions include pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in the Pharmaceutical Quality Control and Quality Assurance and Regulatory affairs domain

Ms. Winfrida Venance Minja

Staff

Winfrida Minja, Earned Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPHARM) in 2019 and completed Master of Pharmacy in hospital and Clinical Pharmacy (MPHARM) in 2024, serves as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). Current academic interests’ centres on therapeutics and pharmacokinetics. In addition to teaching responsibilities, provides clinical pharmacy services in the Infectious Disease and Cardiology Departments at Bugando Medical Centre. Also actively involved in mentoring undergraduate students in both clinical practice and research activities. Research efforts are concentrated on infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases, with aspirations to advance career further in these fields. Committed to enhance clinical pharmacy services and education to improve healthcare outcomes.
