DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS AND PHARMACY PRACTICE

The Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice is a place where commitment to excellence in academia, research, and development is demonstrated. It focuses on providing students with knowledge and skills in the quantitative aspects of drug delivery and pharmacist practices. These include the design, development, and evaluation of drugs in combination with an appropriate dosage form; biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics; professional ethics; drug dispensing; drug management; applied communication skills; drug storage and inventory; and community pharmacy operations. The students also are equipped with expertise in therapeutics, in which they acquire knowledge of diseases and their management as well as skills in patient assessment and clinical health care.

Dr.Stanley Mwita

Dr. Stanley Mwita is a registered pharmacist and lecturer at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). He did a Bachelor of Pharmacy (2003–2007) and a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Management (2013–2015), both at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Further, he did his PhD in Pharmacy Practice at CUHAS from 2018 to 2022. He joined CUHAS in 2013 as a tutorial assistant. Prior to his appointment at CUHAS, he did an internship at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in 2007/2008, worked as a municipal pharmacist at Singida Municipal in 2008–2011, and was a pharmacist at the Baylor Children’s Foundation in Tanzania (Lake Zone) in 2011–2013. He is the national trainer for accredited drug dispensing outlets (ADDOs) dispensers, the national chief external examiner of pharmaceutical sciences for National Technical Awards (NTA) exams, and the national supervisor of febrile illness management in ADDO shops. His main interests are in teaching and mentoring, pharmacy practice, maternal and child health, malaria, pharmaceutical logistics and supply chain management, and the rational use of medicines.

Mr. Deogratias .M. Katabalo

Deogratias M Katabalo is a registered Pharmacist and Assistant lecturer at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). He did Bachelor of Pharmacy (2005- 2010) at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dar es salaam, Tanzania) and Masters of Pharmacy in clinical pharmacy at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He joined CUHAS in 2011 as Tutorial Assistant. Prior to his appointment at CUHAS, he did internship at Bugando medical Centre in 2010/2011. He is also working as a consultant clinical pharmacist at the departments of pediatrics and oncology of the Bugando medical Centre, a largest referral hospital in northwestern Tanzania. He is mentoring pharmacy students in the areas of pharmacokinetics, patient assessment and therapeutics. Also he is a mentor of the Tanzania pharmaceutical students’ organization (TAPSA) at the university level. Mr. Deogratias M Katabalo is passionately involved in clinical trials; Evidence based health care and therapeutics through which he has published several research articles in peer reviewed pharmaceutical journals and He has published one book.

Ms.Winfrida Venance Minja

She is a registered pharmacist who is also a tutorial assistant at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). She did her Bachelor of pharmacy at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (Mwanza Tanzania) from 2015 to 2019. She conducted her internship at Mt Meru Regional Referral Hospital (MMRRH) for six months, then at Pharmacy Council Lake Zone (Mwanza) for the remained six months in year 2020. Then she joined CUHAS as a tutorial assistant on February 10th 2021 department of pharmacy practice and Therapeutics in School of Pharmacy. She is determined to support CUHAS on academic aspects to fulfil its mission and vision as she is committed on teaching and researching. She is also looking forward to advance her carrier to the higher levels.

Ms.Kayo Hamasaki

M.Pharm (Japan), Assistant Lecturer in Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice
Kayo Hamasaki took Master in Clinical Pharmacy at Toho University in Japan and then continued to study clinical pharmacy at the University of Alberta in Canada for 2 years. She worked in a hospital and community pharmacy for 6 years and in 2007 she dispatched as a volunteer tutor at DPS/IHAS/WBUCHS under Japan International Cooperation Agency. She joined CUHAS in 2009 at the begging of starting B.Pharm programme. Her interests are pharmaceutical care, uses and quality of medicin

Mr.James Clement Kapala

Tutorial Assistant at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). He did bachelor of Pharmacy (2011-2015) at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (Mwanza, TANZANIA). He joined CUHAS in February, 2020. Prior to this appointment, he conducted internship at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital (2016). He worked as a Pharmacist superintendent at Medical Stores Department from July 2017 for 2 years.

Mr. Baraka Fundo

Baraka Fundo is a registered pharmacist and a Tutorial Assistant at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). He completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from 2018 to 2022 at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam. Before joining CUHAS, he served as a Tutor at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences of Kampala International University in Dar es Salaam. Prior to his tenure at Kampala International University, he undertook his internship at Muhimbili National Hospital, in Dar es Salaam. His professional interests encompass Clinical Pharmacy, Molecular Pharmacology, and Pharmacovigilance, reflecting his commitment to advancing pharmaceutical science and ensuring optimal patient care.

Mr. Emmanuel Kimaro

Emmanuel E. Kimaro is a registered pharmacist and Assistant lecturer at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). He did undergraduate studies (2008-2012) and Masters of pharmacy in Industrial pharmacy (2015-2017) at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Currently (2023) working on developing a research proposal for a PhD program in pharmaceutical sciences “Impact of household storage conditions on the quality of insulin, glycemic control and the cost of managing diabetes in Mwanza, Tanzania”. He joined CUHAS in the department of pharmaceutics and pharmacy practice in 2013 soon after finishing his internship program. Over the years he developed an interest in pharmaceutical formulation development, analytical method development (Thin layer chromatographic technique) and regulatory sciences. Lastly he also has passion for linking entrepreneurship and the skills we are teaching our students.
